If you have been exposed to any media at all over the past month or so, you have heard those words dozens if not hundreds of times. The media response to the swine flu has made it seem like a bigger threat than it is. So far, only about fifty people worldwide can be confirmed to have died from the virus. Compare this to your everyday run-of-the-mill flu, which kills an average of 36,000 people a year in the United States alone.

So what's the story here? What's the big deal?

First of all, the H1N1 virus, as it is now being called, is the standard influenza virus that we have run-ins with every winter flu season. What makes this particular variant strain unique is that it has two additional DNA strands. One is bird flu; the other is swine flu. Such a combination of DNA from different viruses is incredibly unlikely, which is probably the main reason there was such concern in the world over this new strain.

Because it's so similar to standard flu, only lab tests can determine if a flu infection is really H1N1. This takes about two days. The typical response to a flu infection is the drug Tamiflu, which can be effective against the flu virus but must be administered within 48 hours of the initial infection for maximum effects. Unfortunately most people infected with flu are contagious for twenty-four hours before demonstrating symptoms. Relying on the Tamiflu drug after the fact is risky.
